Fall Signs Made With Dollar Store Items!

Here is a really simple and affordable idea for making fun signs, without it costing a fortune. I made this fall sign, using three signs I picked up for the Dollar Tree for $1.25 each. That means the sign cost me $3.75 in the wood material, which is usually the most expensive part of sign making for me.

This project was so fun, as it did not require much effort or cost, and you could really turn it into whatever you want to. The idea here is how to make a nice sizable sign for your home or event, using these dollar store signs that we put together – not to make the exact same sign we show here.

We were using our fall signs for a Caramel Apple Bar, and a Hot Apple Cider Drink Bar which is why you see the apple theme going on here.

The apple cider bar sign, is one we bought pre-made at the Dollar Tree, and then we purchased three of these wood signs with the apple cut outs, to make the full sized Caramel Apple Bar sign we wanted. We used ours to decorate during fall, but you could really use this idea anytime of the year. I really loved the apple cut outs in the signs, as it lends really well to fall, but you could purchase any three vertical signs like this, and use those the same way. It is rare to find just wood signs (so nothing already on them) which was another things I loved about these, but that is ok. If your signs have writing on them already, it is generally a very simple process of lightly sanding and then painting over them (like an all white or black chalk base), before using them. Other than that the process of making your sign will be the same, so remember that when you are shopping for your products to use.

Supplies Needed To Make This Fall Sign with Dollar Store Signs:

  • 3 Vertical signs (I got these three from my local Dollar Tree during the fall season)
  • Paint Sticks (you could use the smaller craft sticks that you can get at the dollar store, but you would need to use more, and these nice paint sticks work well), I grab the packs of paint sticks you can get at HomeDepot – they are pretty affordable, and then I have them on hand for various crafts I like to make with them.
  • Hot Glue
  • Wood Glue

I found these three thin vertical signs at my local Dollar Tree and immediately new I wanted them to make one larger sign.

My intention was to make a sign for my caramel apple bar, as I mentioned above, so I loved the apple cut outs. But even if you do not, don’t let that stop you. Think outside of the box. Are there three wood cut outs at the Dollar store you like, that you could hot glue over the top of those to create a different design (you can see the wood truck cut out I glued on the bottom of my sign above, that is the type of cut out I am taking about). Or is there a thin horizontal picture you like, that you could glue across the top of this frame to cover them. The idea is to inspire you to be creative with your own signs, just providing some ideas to get you started creating your own with these affordable materials.

This process of making a sign with dollar store boards is so simple! It really does not get much easier than this.  I used

The next step is to glue your paint sticks on the back to hold your boards together. I add some wood glue to the back of the stick in three spots (so it will hit each board.

Then I add hot glue in three other spots will it will also hit each piece, and immediately press it glue side down on those boards.

Hold it in place securely until the hot glue feels set and secure. It is ok if some wood glue leaks out the sides.

You might wonder why I use hot glue and wood glue. Wood glue is used, because it has a much stronger hold than hot glue, and it will hold up much better over time. You could also use an epoxy or E6000 glue too (or a Gorilla glue).

I then use the hot glue, to immediately hold it in place so I am not waiting all night for it to try, and risking it shifting around. After years of crafting this is what has made this process the easiest on me.

Note that they do make a Gorilla Hot glue these days too, if you want to get a similar effect but only using one kind of glue.

I used 4 paint sticks on my sign, to hold it securely (one at the top and bottom, and two spread out evenly in between).

These signs already came with twine hangers on them, so I kept those on to use as a way to hang the sign. If you prefer you could add a different hanger on them at this point too.

Once I had my wood pallet ready to decorate, I used my Cricut to cut out a design I liked. The dollar store does also have sticker clings you could use for this if you wanted to grab something that was already cut out (look over by the picture frames, that is where I usually find mine).

Another idea would be to mod podge on a napkin design, or calendar picture you like too.

Once I had my words added, I also painted and attached a wood truck cut out. I just liked the rustic feel, and felt it lent well to the fall theme for this one, but you can use any of the many wood cut outs you often find at the dollar stores (look in the craft section, as well as in holiday items. They often have these attached to boxes, or you could use ornaments etc. The idea is to give the sign a bit of a 3-D effect, so use whatever you like best!

This sign was so simple, and so affordable to make, and I loved the result. It is a fun way to be able to make a sign that you might just use for an event (like I did for my caramel apple bar) and not have to spend a fortune on it, or one you want to use all season long.

It could also work great for decor for baby showers, parties, weddings and so much more. The main point is to inspire you about using these really affordable dollar store signs, to make a custom sign you love for your home or party!
