Homemade Fruit Rollups - Berry Version

Homemade Fruit Roll Ups – Berry Version!

A favorite treat for my girls are fruit rollups as it has the sweet flavor of fruit, but it’s packaged & eaten in a much more enjoyable way. But I don’t love buying the processed fruit rollups in the store, so I love that you make homemade fruit roll ups at home without all of the “extra” ingredients & you can make them with less sugar, too! So much healthier –  a snack you can feel good about your kids chowing down on for summer snacks, back to school treats & much more!

We are trying to find more & more recipes which replace favorites from the store, but without all the added ingredients, so we know exactly what is going into the recipes we are giving our kids. This is a great way to use up extra fruit too, especially if you buy more in bulk during the summertime (we have found a local food buying co-op where we are buying some fruit in bulk, so we’ve been using our dehydrator for some of the extra fruit. This way none of it goes to waste but we can use it up quickly and it’s more frugal to buy the fruit in bulk so it saves us money too.

This recipe is for raspberry -strawberry fruit roll ups, but you could use any fruit that you have an abundance of & it would taste delicious! It’s really so versatile to try lots of different combinations & see what your family likes the best!

Homemade Fruit Roll Ups:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of strawberries
  • 2 cups of raspberries
  • 1 cup of apple sauce

Directions:

Making homemade fruit roll ups

Blend strawberries, raspberries and apple sauce until very smooth

Homemade Roll Ups on parchment paper

On a parchment lined dehydration tray spread the mixture very thinly. Try to have it spread as even as possible

If you are using a dehydrator set it to “fruit” and dehydrate for 4-6 hours

If you are using a oven set it to the lowest possible heat (usually around 160) and dehydrate for 2-3 You’ll want to check on the fruit every 30 minutes past the 2 hour mark

Fruit Roll Up after Dehydrating

You want the fruit roll up to be dry to the touch but still flexible.

Finished Homemade Fruit Roll Ups

Let cool and cut into strips and roll.

Tip: The key to great dehydration is thinly spread fruit roll ups. Use an offset spatula to get the thinnest evenest layer. If you don’t have an offset spatula you can use a regular spatula

Dehydrator Options:

As we mentioned, you can make this in the oven or in a dehydrator, but if you love to buy fruit in bulk & save money, a dehydrator is a great investment. We love using our dehydrator especially in the summertime for all the summer fruits! They also work well for making homemade beef jerky too.

Here are a few options of dehydrators to consider:

Nesco Food Dehydrator

Nesco Snackmaster Pro Dehydrator – this is the dehydrator that we have had for about 5 years & we love it! It is highly rated (4 1/2 out of 5 stars out of 6000+ reviews). It is fairly inexpensive for dehydrators, but still gets the work done.  It seems to dry very evenly thru the layers so we have found it to work well for us.

Nutrichef Dehydrator

Nutrichef Electric Food Dehydrator with 5 Stackable Trays – this is also highly rated (4 1/2 stars out of 600+ reviews). It’s a great compact dehydrator that also is pretty inexpensive for a dehydrator & will work well if you are new to dehydrating meat, fruit, etc.
