Safeway – Earn Fuel Discounts on Gift Card Purchases + $50 Safeway Gift Card Giveaway!

One of the reasons that we regularly shop at Safeway is the Fuel Rewards Points program they offer, where you can earn gas discounts based on your purchases at the store when you use your Club Card. It’s difficult to find ways to save money on gas in this economy, so I always look for promotions where I can get fuel discounts while buying items I need.

Here’s how the Fuel Rewards program typically works:

  • Spend $1 on groceries= 1 point
  • Spend $1 on qualifying gift cards = 2 points

Every 100 points get you 10¢ off per gallon for a single fill-up at a Safeway gas station. You can use your points in increments of 100 and use up to 1000 points for a single fill-up.

  • 100 points = 10¢ off per gallon
  • 200 points = 20¢ off per gallon
  • 500 points = 50¢ off per gallon
  • 1000 points = $1 off per gallon

If you’ve been following our Safeway coupon matchup posts, you’ve noticed a special Fuel Rewards promotion going on right now, where you can earn 4 times the gas reward discounts when you purchase gift cards. This means that for every qualifying gift card purchase, you will earn 4 points for every $1 spent.  {These gift cards are not included: American Express, PayPower, Mastercard, My Choice, Safeway, Visa, Only 1 Visa, NetSpend and RE-loadit Cards.}

The best way to use this promotion to your advantage is to think about any possible gift cards you might be needing in the next few months. If you know you’ll be going out to eat at a particular restaurant, then you could buy a gift card to that restaurant. Or if you have birthdays or thinking ahead for Christmas gifts, think about the who’s on your list that you need to buy gift cards (there are always those people on my list that only want a gift card, so this is a time to take advantage of getting a fuel discount while also taking care of a gift on my list). Or if you know you’ll be doing Black Friday shopping (or Christmas shopping) at a specific retailer then buy that gift card to get your fuel discount. It also will help you to stay within your budget if you have a select amount on a gift card to use!

  2. I buy itunes and most major dept store gift cards at safeway. I rarely make it to these stores to buy gift cards as gifts, so having them avail. at safeway is a much easier way for me to make my purchase(s).

  3. I would purchase a Lowe’s giftcard. I was just at Safeway today looking at the options and trying to decide if I should do this.

  24. I buy restaurant & Starbucks gift cards as gifts for friends and families. Also, Home Depot, Old Navy, Macy’s and other retail stores.

  25. I would get just the safeway gift card so that I could use it to by my groceries and earn the feul discounts. Many times I can knock enough of the gas price that it is cheaper than Costco.

  39. i would buy the toys r us or babies r us card. my daughter was born 6 weeks early and still need lots of stuff!

  40. I would buy a Starbucks and Amazon.com gift cards. My 7 and 6 year old and I could have a Starbucks date and I could start my Christmas shopping!
