I wanted to share a simple little tip which has really been helping my husband and I stay organized about events we have going on in our lives!! We’ve recently started using an online calendar that we both can access throughout the day (he updates it at work and I update while at home with the girls). We’ve tried all sorts of various methods to keep track of each other’s schedules, but no matter what, it always seems that at one point in time, one of us will forget to tell each other about an important dr appt, meeting, etc. and we’ll end up tentatively planning conflicting activities.
S0, my husband came up with a great solution!! We use Hotmail for our email, so we now are using the calendar feature that comes with Hotmail! The great thing about this is that it is accessible anywhere on the internet–not just a calendar that we keep on our desktop or a calendar that we have hanging in our kitchen (we do have that, too, but more with important events like birthdays, anniversaries, trips). This is something that we both update throughout the day–he lists meetings, games (when he was coaching), dr appts, evening events at his HS, and other things that come up throughout his day–while I list dr appts, playdates, and other activities we’re involved in.
It’s a great way for us to keep track of each other’s schedule and know what’s going on in each other’s day. I like to know when he might have an important meeting or evaluation going on, too, so that I can pray for him and make sure to find out how it went at lunchtime or after school’s out! It’s just a nice, extra way to stay connected throughout the week–which was critical for us this spring as he was working an extra job. Not only was he pulling his typical long hours as a teacher, he also was coaching baseball at his high school and wouldn’t get home till late in the evening every night for 2 mos. So, I enjoyed keeping up with what things he had going on each day and knowing the teams they were playing as well.
There are all sorts of options for calendars online–Google Calendar is a very popular one, and most of the other email programs have a calendar feature as well–Hotmail, Yahoo, etc! With our Hotmail calendar, we can have alerts sent to us reminding us of what is going on that day–VERY helpful as we can both be quite forgetful. For Hotmail, you can find the calendar feature on one of the tabs at the top–click on “More” and then “calendar” will be the first option. For Yahoo mail, when you’re in your email, it will have a tab for “calendar” right at the top–very easy to find. For Google, there are also tabs at the top (Gmail, Calendar, Documents, Photo, Reader)–this is a very popular option for a lot of people!!
I’ve also thought about creating a calendar just for Thrifty NW Mom readers–where I can list all the local and nationwide bargain-related events (like Free Doughnut Day at Krispy Kreme coming up), so you could see at a glance what might be going on that week. I’d love some feedback/suggestions if you know how I could incorporate that into blogger. I am thinking the Google calendar would be the best option to use with Blogger.
So, that’s my simple little tip for What Works for Me Wednesday!! It’s definitely something that’s really helped us organize our life a little more these past few months–so I hope it’s something that you might be able to use, too (if you’re not already using a similar system).
