You can tell which flavor she liked best! The Phineas & Ferb rinse! :)
It’s time for an update on the Listerine Smart Rinse Sweet Smart challenge that we have taken the past 3 weeks. It was perfect timing as my girls had a dentist appointment right in the middle of the challenge, so that provided some extra motivation for them to really want to do well & impress the dentist (especially for my older daughter). Basically, our goal with the Sweet Smart Challenge was to work on increasing our oral care habits as a family and make it more fun for our kids, using a rewards system & all sorts of new products from Listerine.
I have to say that this was definitely a much-needed challenge for our family as we do tend to get so busy during the school year and can get more lax on keeping up with brushing twice a day and especially the flossing. Having a simple incentive chart to keep track of when the did their “brushing routine” was a great motivator for my girls. We charted it weekly and kept track if they did their “brushing routine” morning & night & if they had 10 check marks (out of a total of 14 – 7 days a week, 2 times a day), then they got a little prize from our treasure box. They just loved being able to check off that box that they loved (the prize was just an added benefit).
The chart was so simple to use, but what really got them excited was having some new products to try out. They each got to pick out a new toothbrush and my older daughter got to choose from 3 different fluoride rinses to try. Honestly, that was the most fun for her – I think if you just bought 2 of the fun new children’s Fluoride rinses from Listerine, your kids would enjoy being able to choose each day. Kids are all about having choices & feeling like they’re in a little bit of control (I’ve been learning this from my Love & Logic class at my church :) ) – so they love having a few options. I always tend to go for the cheapest product, but by offering some fun new flavors, my daughter was very excited to try out using a fluoride rinse for the first time.
My older daughter started off this 3 week Sweet Smart challenge by having never used a fluoride rinse before. She was only able to swish for maybe 3-5 seconds in the beginning, but we made it a challenge every day to see how much longer she could swish for each time. Now, at the end of the challenge, she can swish back & forth for over a minute! She’s pretty proud of herself! And I love the fact that she’s getting that extra fluoride treatment for her teeth, especially considering we don’t have fluoride in our city water system. She also was really interested in trying out the special flosser & try to floss herself (although I did follow up by flossing with her as well). My little gal is still not totally into flossing, but she’s watching her big sister & definitely seems more excited than when we first started the challenge.
For my husband and I, I think we just really needed a challenge like this to make our family’s oral care a priority as we both have struggled in the past with fitting it into our busy schedules, especially in the mornings as I struggle to get the kids out the door. This has helped us to see that just a few basic changes – a simple reward system and some fun, new oral care products have really gotten our kids excited about their “brushing routine” and it’s definitely helped us to be better examples to our kids about developing a regular habit of brushing, flossing & rinsing twice a day so that we’re all doing it as a family. My girls are definitely getting into a good habit & routine now (don’t they say it takes about 3 weeks to make something a routine?) and I really think we’ll continue on a good path towards keeping our oral care a priority.
