If you’re a regular Safeway shopper, then you’ve no doubt noticed the new green shelf tags that Safeway now uses in their stores.  These shelf tags are part of Safeway’s new Simple Nutrition program.  This program is designed to make it easier & quicker for customers to identify healthier food & drink options when shopping in the store.

Safeway recently asked me to check out the Simple Nutrition program & share my thoughts about it, so I’ve been checking it out each time I head to the store lately.  {Safeway is my go-to store as it’s literally 2 minutes away & the employees are always so pleasant & very willing to work with me when I’m using my coupons at my local store} In my store, instead of heading to a special aisle or section where they group all the organic, gluten-free, sugar-free  & other health-food items together, you will find all of these items in the regular aisles.  You can do a quick scan of the aisle & head straight for the green Simple Nutrition tags to search for the healthiest options for the food item you’re looking for. This is particularly useful for those families with special dietary needs such as gluten-free or sugar-free diets.

Here are some  highlights of the information found on the Simple Nutrition shelf tags:

  • Organic
  • Gluten-Free
  • Natural
  • Calorie-Smart
  • Sugar-Free
  • Low-Fat
  • Good source of Vitamin A or C
  • Good source of Fiber

We have been working on finding healthier & lower calorie options for our family, so I have been finding these bright green tags very helpful to direct me straight to the products that might be more what we are looking for, especially when I’m looking to try new things & don’t have time to read the backs of all the boxes to find the variety of products I’m searching for during my shopping trips.  You’ll still want to read the nutritional information on the products carefully as something labeled sugar-free may then have aspartame or another ingredient replacing the sugar.  Use the shelf tags as a way to direct your attention to the products you’d be more interested in & then you can decide if it’s going to be a product that will fit your needs.

So, what have you thought of the Simple Nutrition shelf tags – how have they been helpful for you?

Stay tuned for a Safeway gift card giveaway coming up soon!!

Disclosure: Safeway provided me with a gift card to check out their new Simple Nutrition program. All of the opinions expressed are my won.

  1. I appreciate the new tags, as they help me to identify the gluten-free items and bring my attention to the healthier items on the shelf. The health food “sections” of the store seemed too separate from the rest of shopping, like health food or gluten-free was some rare oddity.

  2. I like them, especially as a family with food alleriges. We’re also trying to eliminate high fructose corn syrup, and it helps to speed up label-reading. I’ve also enjoyed the catalina’s for the “Open Nature” meats.
