Point Defiance Zoo & Northwest Trek Giveaway

For those of you in the South Sound area or thinking of visiting the area to take advantage of the last few weeks of summertime, two of the most popular places to take your family and friends for a day trip are the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium and Northwest Trek.  Northwest Trek Wildlife Park is out in Eatonville, which is on the way to Mt Rainier National Park (Paradise side). The Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium is in Tacoma, down close to the waterfront & Puget Sound.

Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium:

Point Defiance Zoo Cubs

If you’ve never been to the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium (PDZA), they have a great variety of animals & sea life – everything from sharks & seahorses, polar bears & peacocks (you’ll see these guys walking all over the zoo), tortoises & tigers and much more! Your kids will love the adorable clouded leopard cubs and the live animal show at the Wild Wonders Outdoor Theater is one of my girls’ favorite things to do at the zoo. The aquarium also has a new Jellies exhibit to learn all about jellyfish.

Not only is the zoo & aquarium awesome to visit, but you can make a day out of your visit by heading into the Point Defiance park after you leave the zoo. They have walking trails,  Rose & Rhodedenron Gardens, a fun playground for kids, Owens Beach for beach time for the kids, a walk along the water watching the ferries & much more.

Northwest Trek:

Northwest Trek Baby Moose

Northwest Trek Wildlife Park is definitely a place you must visit if you’ve never been & once you’ve visited, you will want to keep going back! It’s filled with over 400 acres of meadows and forests that you can explore with a Discovery Tram Tour to see native Northwest animals out in their natural habitat, but up close via the tram. Or they also offer a number of animals to visit with their Walking Tour.

Right now is baby season at Northwest Trek too, where you’ll see mamas & their babies such as a caribou calf, bison calves and even the  adorable new moose calf born July 17th on the park’s 40th birthday. She’s the first moose calf in 15 years at Northwest Trek, so this is definitely a time to go visit & see if you can spot the moose calf  & other animals babies on the tram tour.

NW Trek Get OUt of the Rut Event

Northwest Trek often has additional programs going on as well, so you might want to time your visit with one of the special programs going on. Over Labor Day weekend, September 5th – 7th, they will have their Get Out of the Rut event. This is a great opportunity to learn about the “rut” or breeding season for elk, deer, caribou, & bighorn sheep as well as take part in a number of activities.

  1. I love the programs/performances on the main stage at PDZA. My kids actually stay entertained. At NT, we all like the tram. It’s so nice to see the animals so close.

  90. My have never been to Point Defiance Zoo, but they would love to go. I think they would like the aquarium part best!

  100. We love the PDZA kids play area and splash park. The kids spend as much time there as looking at the animals. We don’t go the NWT as often as it is a bit more of a drive but the kids like the tram part, sometimes the little guys get tired with all the walking of a zoo trip.

  101. I’ve not been to either point defiance or nw trek, but have wanted to go for several years now. I’d love to see the aquarium and polar bears at point defiance (plus those adorable closed leopard cubs!) and just have a fun day with friends/family at nw trek.

  112. 1) I grew up in Tacoma, technically McChord. So I have been to both. I think my favorite thing though about Northwest Trek is making the memories and having the memories from when I was a kid going on school field trips. I look forward to making memories there with my son.

  131. I have been to neither of these places. My husband and I just had our fourth baby this month, and we have been trying to figure something fun to do with them before school starts. And this sounds like the most perfect thing!! My kids would love all the animals!!

  137. I have never been to either PDZA or NW Trek. We have been trying to make plans to go since we moved to WA a few years ago but they always seem to get cancelled. I am most looking forward to seeing the Clouded Leopard triplets at PDZA. My family and I absolutely adore Clouded Leopards and have been checking social media for updates on these babies since they were born. I also am looking forward to the tram tour at NW Trek. I grew up in San Diego and loved going to the Wild Animal Park, where they also have a tram tour. It is so nice to see the animal up close while they roam free.

  138. My favorite part of PDZA is the kids zone. It is very spacious and has plenty for the kids to do. From little ones to the older, I thoroughly enjoyed it with my kids.

  182. I love that Northwest Trek provides a wonderful experience of true nature. My daughter’s love animals and they loving learning everything they can about them.
