Today I wanted to take a break from the deals to share with you the story of a special little friend who is near & dear to my heart, Justus Fuccillo. Justus’ mom is Sarah, my MOPS table leader & friend. Sweet Justus is just 3 years old, only a few weeks younger than my little 3 year old Olivia, and he has quite a remarkable story.
Just to give you a little background, Justus was born prematurely 10 weeks before his due date & he was born with Hydrocephalus, which is a buildup of fluid inside his brain due to his brain swelling. Since his birth 3 short years ago, Justus has undergone 13 brain surgeries due to a shunt that his surgeons placed in his brain to keep the fluid draining. Shunts have one of the worst rates of any medical devices with 98% of shunts failing within 10 years (50% will fail within 2 years). Before his last surgery this past February, Justus started having prolonged seizures due to his shunt failing, with a seizure that lasted at least 40 minutes while he was asleep. These prolonged seizures are very dangerous for Justus as he needs immediate medication & it’s a sign that his shunt is failing, which is life-threatening.
Not only does Justus have these significant medical issues & now the risk of prolonged seizures, but his mom Sarah is essentially a single mom right now. Her husband, Andy is serving our country in the Army & is currently stationed in North Carolina for training with the Army for almost 2 years. Unfortunately, they were not able to all move together to NC due to Justus’ medical needs as he needs to be close to the Children’s Hospital & his team of doctors.
How You Can Help:
Justus’ increased risk for life-threatening seizures has necessitated the need for a seizure-alert / service dog, to be able to alert his family to the fact that Justus is having a seizure so he can get the immediate medical help that is needed. I know this is not something I’d usually share on Thrifty NW Mom, but this family is very near & dear to my heart & I want to help them in any way I can! I also feel that couponing has given me the opportunity to be able to bless others & give back to the community & I know many of you feel the same way, so I wanted to let you know about this opportunity to help.

Prayer: Most importantly, if you believe in the power of prayer, I’d ask that you would pray for complete healing for this remarkable little boy, Justus. He is just the sweetest, happiest little boy & has a smile that lights up any room. His parents are amazing people who truly love the Lord & trust that God has a wonderful plan for little Justus.
Spread the Word: The costs are very high to find & train a seizure-alert dog for Justus. So, a Paws for Justus Benefit Auction has been set up to help fund the costs of this dog for Justus. This will be a fun dessert buffet & silent auction on Friday May 18th at 7pm at Bethany Baptist Church in Puyallup, WA. There will be all sorts of great items to bid on with the auction such as Seahawks tickets, photography packages, Jamba Juice gift cards, massages & much more, so it could be a very fun date night or girls night out! Even better, it’s FREE to attend to the Benefit Auction! You can “like” the Paws for Justus Facebook page for more info & easily share the page with friends & family who might be interested in hearing this little boy’s story or attending the event
Donate: If you have a business or know of a business that would be interested in donating an item or service to the Paws for Justus Benefit Auction, you can email: [email protected] to get in touch with someone. It’s a great way to advertise about your business, too, with business cards, flyers, etc.
If you’d like to personally donate towards their expenses for a Seizure Alert dog, you can contact [email protected] to find out how to donate.
Thank you for taking the time to read this & learn about my courageous, little friend Justus! I’d encourage you to follow along on the Paws for Justus Facebook page so you can hear more about his story & ways to help!
