Frugal Vacation Idea – “Staycation” in your own Backyard

Sharing is caring!

Are you looking for something fun to do as a family this fall without having to travel far with the kids back-to-school? A “staycation” is a great idea because it allows your kids to experience the thrill of camping outdoors – without  having to leave your backyard! If your budget is tight as you get ready for the holiday season, this is an opportunity to still be able to make some fun, family memories outdoors.

Coleman recently sent us some camping gear to try out for ourselves on a “staycation”. Unfortunately we’ve had many days of rain the past few weeks, but the weather finally cooperated & we were able to try all this cool gear out for ourselves this past weekend. We’ve actually only gone camping once in the past 5 years & that’s when my oldest was 2 months old. So, this is a nice way to try it out before going on a real camping trip next summer.

Here are some fun pictures from our adventure:

Here’s our Coleman Sundome Tent – This was a nice, spacious tent – 10′ x 10′ which sleeps 5. It was quite tall so you didn’t have to walk around all hunched over. My husband said this tent was very simple & easy to put together. He was quite impressed!

As soon as we got the tent up, our girls had to go in right away & check out the sleeping quarters.  Our little Olivia is checking out the new Coleman Warm-Weather Sleeping Bag.  She thought it was pretty cozy -in fact, she would have liked to have had that big sleeping bag all to herself! The Coleman Extra High Queen Airbed was pretty comfy, too – definitely couldn’t do camping without the airbed! :)

{Playing with the flashlight in the dark was lots of fun, too!}

Coleman also sent us these 2 cooler products to try – Coleman 50-Quart Wheeled Coolerand Coleman 2-Gallon Stacker Jug.  This Coleman Stacker Jug is great not just for camping, but I think it could be a great item to bring along to group picnics or weekend sports games. And the 50 Quart Cooler is awesome because it is supposed to keep ice cool for 5 days. We didn’t test it out that long – but did try it out overnight & it definitely kept things very cold.

The favorite item was definitely the  Coleman LED Quad Lantern.  This lantern features 4 removable LED panels & each one can be used as its own light. Perfect for us as we could each have a section of the lantern to use. {The only downside is that it takes 8 D batteries – so we’ll be interested to see how long they last.}

  1. yes this summer we put up the tent in the back yard, and had a fire in the fire pit because I hurt my neck and couldn’t go on the planned camping trip. so we improvised and let the kids “Camp” in our backyard. they loved it the first two nights, but after that both girls wanted to sleep in the house again.

    A great site for local stuff to see and do is here:

    you can go on there and put other states too.
