Sometimes its good to hit the archives, for a little frugal inspiration. We have this nice, detailed guest post from Sarah at Chickie Momma Crafts on how to make homemade playdough. Her photos are so much nicer, so be sure to reference the original article. Jen and I got the girls together for some fun, while we got a little work done, this week, and homemade play dough played a major role in that play date/work meeting!

Plus, making your own play dough is cheap and easy.  Its not that play dough is a particularly expensive item, but it is so convenient to be able to reach into your pantry and whip a batch up.

We made Sarah’s homemade playdough recipe with my girls (only substituted food coloring for kool aid, and left the cornstarch out, since we did not have any on hand) with my girls. One of the great things about homemade playdough is that recipes are flexible, depending on what ingredients you have on hand. It took me about 5 minutes to whip a batch up, and the kids loved it. I stored mine in a plastic bag in the Fridge and it has held up well.

Start by choosing your recipe and just toss the simple ingredients in  a large bowl.
Mix until it has reached a play dough consistency and form into however many balls that you want to color.
Add food coloring (takes a minute to work this through the dough).
Warning, your hands will get dirty if you are using food coloring, don’t do this right before a special evening out  ;-)
Let the kids have at it.  You can use simple household items like cookie cutters and plastic cutlery for them to have even more fun with the play dough.
