Seattle Childrens Hospital, in partnership with Kohl’s Cares, is once again offering a FREE bike helmet for kids program, where you can get free helmets for kids anywhere from 1 to 18 years old (the exact age groups they will have helmets available will vary from event to event).

The program offers various dates in Washington state where they set up for a day, and provide free helmet fittings and giveaways for children year-round. They also teach parents and kids how to properly fit every helmet they give away! This weekend they are offering free kids bike helmets in Federal Way, and they they will have dates available throughout the summer in other locations.

In previous years they held a few more dates, for Ski Helmet giveaways and multi sport helmet giveaways, so keep an eye on their schedule to see if those dates pop up later this year too. You can find the full schedule of giveaway dates and locations here, as well as details on what will be given away at each event!

I highly recommend getting to these events early. We went to an event at the Covington Kohls a few years back, and there were long lines. The younger kids helmets in particular go faster. It’s a great event, but will likely require some waiting, so just be prepared for that.

The event is hosted by Seattle Children’s Hospital, and here are more details –

  • The child must be present to receive the helmet & fitting.

If you are not able to make this event, there is a list of ‘Low Cost Helmet Resources’ at makesurethehelmetfits.com.

I had three kids with me when I went a few years ago and they had to wait in line for around 30 + minutes, but it was worth it. Saved some serious money to get three nice quality helmets for free (and they showed her how to properly fit them on the kids)!

Another possible bonus – Kohls came out to the line a few years ago and handed out 25% off coupons for Kohls. Can’t promise this will happen, but the event is co-sponsored by Kohls Cares, so it’s possible!

Low Cost Bike Helmets in Oregon:

I have not found any free bike helmet offers yet for Oregon (please let us know if you know of any) – but we did find that the OHSU Doernbecher’s Children’s Safety Center (Inside Doernbecher’s Children’s Hospital) is offering low-cost helmets. These low cost helmets are safety-certified for bike, skate & ski.

We’ll keep you updated if we find any other free offers for bike helmets!
