A few years ago when I started really couponing, I realized that my pantry was not working for me.  I was having a hard time finding items I had bought and things were getting lost in the abyss that was my pantry.  After reading some organization blogs and brainstorming with my husband (a master organizer) we decided on a plan.  First we wanted to do something relatively inexpensive and something that would help with the problem of not finding what I had just purchased.

We decided on a “bin method”  for organizing the different types of products.  We came up with a dozen different categories. Some categories such as baking needed more than one bin. You have to determine which bins will work best for your family – these are just the ones that we found worked best for us.

Categories:

• Breads
• Baking
• Pastas
• Grains & Rice
• Drinks
• Breakfasts
• Cereal
• Snacks (granola bars, fruit snacks, chips)
• Paper products
• Condiment extras
• Canning supplies
• Hot drinks (teas, coffee, cocoa)
• Poduce (potatoes, onions, etc – items  that don’t need refrigeration).

Bins:

Next we had to decide on our bins – we wanted something large enough to hold large cereal boxes, but it also had to fit on the shelf with no over hang. I toyed with the idea of making my own covered boxes using a method similar to these covered cardboard storage boxes.  But I didn’t have the same enough of the same sized boxes and I worried that pulling them out often might tear the cardboard.

I then thought of pretty baskets to organize the pantry but I needed about 15-20 bins so that was going to be way too expensive.

Finally we decided on Ikea’s plastic bins that come in red, white or royal blue.  They were cheap, sturdy and the perfect size. I looked on their website to find them, but they didn’t have them there; however we found them located in the store.  The price has gone up from $1.50 when I first purchased them to $1.99 now.  Still a great deal!

We used Rubbermaid bins from Walmart for our baking essentials – sugar, flour, brown sugar, etc.  I also really liked the basket look so we did get a few of those for certain items such as our recycling.  We also use a few drawer bins that we already had around the house for dog treats and our boys’ asthma supplies.

Labels:

After we purchased the storage items we needed,  I made labels on the computer – nothing fancy,  just a simple word document. I printed them off on cardstock and cut them out the same size. Using double stick tape we attached them to the bin.  Maybe one day I will make chalkboard tags or something cute like that but for now these work!

It has been two years since we first redid the pantry and I have to say – it is still working! Once a year,  I go through and wipe down the shelves and clean it out. I have changed a few items, added some more bins, replaced some labels, but I am super happy with it!  The best part is I can find the items I have purchased.  Knowing what you have and where it is located is really important when it comes to saving money. This way you can grow your stockpile in a reasonable way and make sure you are providing meals for your family with your stockpile.

Blockbuster has had a promotion going on in its stores since before Christmas where you can get 3  previously viewed  DVDs (or Blu-Ray) for $14.99, which would be a good price, except that the selection is usually not all that good. In addition, you get a $5 gift card if you have the Blockbuster Combo Pass (unlimited in-store game and movie rentals which is $14.99/month), which would make it only $9.99 for three movies, or $3.33 each. The big news here, is that all the movies that were popular for the Christmas holiday season are now a part of this promotion. In our local store, I saw the following movies available:

As I mentioned earlier today, my hubby and I had an  impromptu date night and we had some time to kill before a movie, so we headed to Old Navy & Target for some clearance sale shopping. I knew I had a Groupon expiring on January 28th for Old Navy & what better time to use it then when a clearance sale is going on. The Groupon was for $20 to spend at Old Navy & the Groupon cost $10 – so that’s a 50% savings right there if you just spend right around $20.

My Clearance Finds:

1 pair of khaki pants – $5.50
1 navy blouse – $13 (not a fabulous price but I thought it was cute)
1 men’s zip-up  navy sweater – $4.20

Total: $22.70 before tax

Amount Paid after Groupon savings: $2.70 + tax
Total Amount Paid (including $10 Groupon amount): $12.70

When you factor in the amount I’d paid for the Groupon, I only spent $12.70 total for all 3 items!  I also received a Super Cash voucher for an extra $10 to spend at a later date since I spent more than $20. The way the Super Cash works is that you need to spend $20 to use the $10 off coupon – so it’s like another 50% off coupon.

When you take advantage of a daily deal site discount + clearance prices, you can really save a significant amount on your purchase.  This is why I’m such a fan of the daily deal site vouchers for online or in-store promotions. If you know that the store regularly has clearance deals, special promotions (which are not excluded on the voucher) then you just need to plan your shopping trip around a time when you can combine these discounts to maximize your savings.

Since we didn’t have snow to build a snowman, we decided to make Rice Krispie snowmen! We had bought the ingredients a few days ago for Rice Krispie treats and were going to make them with our girls this week, but I thought it would be fun to do something different.

I got my inspiration from Marie at Make and Takes - she had posted a Snowman Rice Krispie idea over at Snackpicks. Ours are a bit different because I wanted my girls to have a smaller serving of the treat, but either way would be fun! You can also check out these Peppermint Rice Krispie Balls or these yummy Rice Krispie Snowmen.

Ingredients:

• 6 cups of Rice Krispies cereal (or any puffed rice cereal)
• 4 cups of mini marshmallows (as you can see – I forgot to take pictures of the ingredients until after we made our treats!) *You could also substitute a jar of marshmallow creme for the mini marshmallows (7 oz)
• 3 tablespoons margarine or butter
• Powdered sugar
• Mini chocolate chips
• Pretzel sticks for arms
• Good & Plenty (for the nose)
• Pull-apart rope red licorice

(My husband brought the last 2 ingredients after work, so I don’t have pictures of those)

Directions:

1. Melt the butter in a saucepan (or you could do this in the microwave too) over low heat.
2. Add the marshmallows (or marshmallow creme) & stir until completely melted.
3. Remove from heat and add the Rice Krispies. Stir until it’s fully coated
4. Once it’s all mixed in and cooled, you can start shaping your snowmen. We shaped them into balls, but made them fairly flat so we could decorate them.
5. Take each ball & roll it in a pan or bowl of powdered sugar
6. You can then use whatever ingredients you have on hand to decorate your snowmen – we happened to have mini chocolate chips, so they worked perfectly for us, but you could use raisins for the eyes, buttons, etc or even just frosting (the writable kind would work even better). Pretzel sticks were perfect for the arms. We used Good & Plenty candy for the nose & a pull-apart licorice rope for the scarf.

My girls decided to make snowballs for their creations & I also tried out a few snowflakes, although those were a bit harder to shape. Just a fun, little winter treat to enjoy with some hot cocoa on a cold winter day!
