New Community Feature at Thrifty NW Mom
February 24, 2010

I wanted to let you know about a new feature I’ve added to Thrifty NW Mom. Over on the right sidebar, you’ll find a new box which says “Come join the Thrifty NW Mom Community”. This is a community set up thru Blogfrog and the goal is for all of us to get to know each other better & a place for all of you to share your deals that you’ve found. I have missed interacting with all of you, as that was the biggest advantage to me when I had the Chat Room as part of the Old Navy Weekly updates – it was great to get to know many of you a little better & hear all of your tips!
The Thrifty NW Mom Facebook Fan page has been a great way to share deals, as well as interact with others to find out more details about how the deals worked for them. You can always feel free to post tips & deals on there -make sure to actually check the page occasionally as those tips will only show up on the page (not in your newsfeed – only the posts that I make show up in your news feed).
However, I know that not everyone is on Facebook, so this BlogFrog community will be an opportunity where everyone can participate & hopefully share deals, while also learning from others about great deals, both in the NW as well as around the country. It’s a great way for you to provide feedback regarding how the deals have worked for you, any tips you have, as well as problems you may have run into that the rest of us can watch for.
I wish I could post all the deals that you all send to me because honestly, you the readers, have the best tips! Unfortunately I just can’t keep up with all the bargains out there or with all the emails I get where many of you share some great tips -life is just a bit crazy with 2 active little ones who keep me hopping during the day! So that’s where you all can come in – feel free to post deals, ask questions, & share experiences on this forum!
So, head on over & introduce yourself – I can’t wait to learn more about all of you & hear your tips! {Just make sure everything is family-friendly & keep things positive & encouraging!

Fun & Simple Frugal Household Tips
February 18, 2010
Today we have another guest post – my bloggy friend Stephanie over at My Frugal Lifestyle is sharing some of her top frugal household tips! I love reading Stephanie’s ideas as she always comes up with the most ingenious ideas for ways to save you money within your home- everything from repurposing items you already have around the house to homemade, easy recipes for cleaning products, & many more ways to be frugal! Stephanie is a fellow NW blogger, living in Idaho with her husband and 2 little boys. Make sure to check out My Frugal Lifestyle for more fabulous do-it-yourself tips & ideas!
First off, I want to thank Jen for inviting me to be a guest blogger on her blog today. I’m so excited to share my frugal ideas with her readers. I can’t wait to show everyone how I’ve become frugal, the fun and easy way.

My name is Stephanie and I’m the author over at My Frugal Lifestyle. When most people think of the word frugal or thrifty, they instantly think we’re paupers who have to live with less. That is so not true. You can still live your life frugally and have everything you’ve ever wanted. I want to show that anybody and everybody can be frugal, just by slightly changing their everyday decisions and lifestyle.
I love trying to find new ways of stretching my family’s hard earned money and saving a buck. I love couponing, but I don’t really post about it too much. That is a whole other blog in and of it’s self. I prefer to blog about the REAL FUN frugal stuff. Here’s some example’s of what I’m talking about:
Here are a few How to make your own homemade household cleaners.

Want to start making your own liquid or dry laundry detergent.
It’s amazing how much money you can save by making your own cleaners.

How to make your own Window Cleaner. It’s simple and it’s easy! I’m sure you already have the stuff in your house to make it. It works like a charm and there are no chemicals to deal with, so it’s safe around the kiddo’s.
I also love to share great Beauty Tips that anybody can afford!

Like making your own homemade bubble bath, facials, footscrubs, and more
There’s nothing better than trying to reuse or recycle something to help stretch your dollar. For instance, what do you do with your old scentsy wax? How about repurpose it!

Make your own emergency candles.
Do you just throw away your cans and used containers? Like your formula cans or Quaker Oats containers? Try reusing them!

Decorate them with scrapbook paper and ribbons, and you can turn them into great gift ideas. Wouldn’t it be cute to make yummy cookies or holiday treats, and place them in a decorated can! You could also turn them into organizational tools too.
I’m also a Stay At Home Mommy with 2 very picky eaters, so trying to be creative with recipes for my kids can be quite tricky. I love sharing my yummy recipes with fellow mommy’s.
Such as Edible Playdough!

This was so fun to make and my kids got a kick out of eating it.
I’ve only scratched the surface on the things I do and share. Come on over to My Frugal Lifestyle and join me in the fun! I have so many more things to share with you and I can’t wait to meet you. If you stop by My Frugal Lifestyle, I’d love to hear from you! Give me a “Shout Out” or a “Hey!” Hope you have a Frugalistic Day!

Unique Valentine’s Gift: 50% off Seattle Helicopter Ride
February 12, 2010
Do you all remember that awesome deal I posted about a month ago for two adult memberships to the Woodland Park Zoo for just $40 total? Well, that deal came from an awesome deal site called Living Social. Living Social is a site similar to Groupon in that they post new daily deals for select cities around the country. Typically these deals are 50% off the regular price and they feature deals related to entertainment, relaxation/spa/massage, food/restaurants, shopping & much more. There is a new deal daily and on Fridays, they offer a deal which will last all weekend long to give you more time to take advantage of that deal!
The way it works is that they post a new deal every day! The deal is not live until a certain number of people buy it. Once they reach their minimum, then it is a live deal. However, you have to act fast if you spot a great deal as they can sell out. The Woodland Park Zoo deal did sell out by the evening hours.
The coolest part of Living Social is that if you buy the deal of the day – they will then give you a unique “link” to send out to your friends & family via email, Facebook, Twitter, etc and if at least 3 people end up buying that deal as well – you get it for FREE!! They won’t charge you for the deal that you bought! I know there were readers last time who were able to get the Woodland Park Zoo membership for FREE by referring their friends/family and thanks to you all, I was able to get it for free, too!!! So, I can definitely vouch for the fact that it does work!!
Living Social has the coolest deal for today and this really could be an amazing gift if you’re looking for a really special, unique Valentine’s gift or maybe a birthday, anniversary or even graduation gift (think ahead!!).

Private Helicopter Ride above Seattle for Two or Three Passengers for just $135!
{ 50% off the regular price}
Here are the details:
-This tour can either be used with 2 people for a 30 minute tour on Flight Route B or with 3 passengers for a 20 minute tour on Flight Route A. So, if you decide to go with 2 other people, each person would pay $67.50
- You have almost a year to use this tour – the expiration is January 31, 2011
-Upgrades are available if you’d like to add on to your tour
This tour is not available to use starting this weekend, though! You will be able to print your deal off by Monday & use after that. However, you could give this as a gift for Valentine’s Day and then you could choose the date you’d like to take your tour (they’re open 7 days/wk) – maybe on a day when the skies are blue & the mountains are crystal clear!
And remember, if you find 3 other people who want to buy this tour as well using your referral link (you’ll get the referral link if you purchase the deal)….then your helicopter tour would be FREE!!!
You can find the latest daily deals at Living Social over on the right sidebar of my blog. But, you can also sign up for their newsletter so you’ll get an email every day with the daily deal.
Check out these other cities/areas featuring a Living Social daily deal:
-Washington DC
-Boston
-San Francisco (there’s a cool wine tasting daily deal in the Napa Valley for today)
-New York
-Austin
Atlanta
