{Giveaway now Ended}

I recently was contacted by Safeway and asked to review Safeway’s Home Grocery Delivery service.  I personally have never tried a grocery delivery service, so I was excited to give it a try, especially as Safeway is one of my top stores I regularly shop at.  I decided to give you the advantages & disadvantages I found while using Safeway’s Home Grocery Delivery.

Advantages:

  • Convenience – Obviously the #1 advantage is convenience. This is great option to have during those times when it’s difficult for you to get to the store – newborn baby, sickness/medical situation, & more.  It’s not always an option to have someone run to the store for you if you’re unable to go & this delivery option gives you the opportunity to still get the items you need without having to rely on others to help you.
  • Simple & easy to use format for the online ordering system -  I liked the fact that they have everything separated into categories (or aisles similar to the ones in the store) to make searching easier or you can search for a specific item.  They use clear pictures of the items & provide extra information if you need it (nutritional information & product details, ingredients, & more).
  • Offer various online savings options – They have a tab at the top of the online ordering service titled “Online Savings”.  You can search for Club Card Discounts, special internet only promotions, etc.
  • Use E-coupons with Safeway delivery (electronic coupons which are saved to your Safeway store card) -You can use E-coupons from Safeway.com, Shortcuts.com & Cellfire.com for further savings on your online order.
  • Quick ordering once you’ve ordered thru Safeway.com - once you’ve done your first order, you can repeat any of those same items if you’d like & then add new items to your list.
  • High-quality produce – I found the produce quality to be even higher than what I’ve found at my local store.

Disadvantages:

  • Higher Price -I did notice an increase in prices overall, even when using the Club Card Savings – the prices overall were higher. However, if you can find items with club card savings/online savings and combine these with the E-coupons, you could find some deals.
  • No manufacturer’s coupons can be used except E-Coupons – Everything is done online (ordering & payment) so there is no way to use any insert or printable manufacturer’s coupons for extra savings
  • Selection may more limited than in stores – the selection is more limited in certain categories than in the stores (I found this to be true  in the areas of produce & meat); however, other categories had quite a good selection & even offered many organic options.  My local Safeway is quite small & more limited in the products they offer, so I actually found much more of a variety of products in areas such as organic products, cereals, snacks, baking goods, & more.

As far as the delivery experience with Safeway’s Home Grocery Delivery, there were two options for delivery. You could choose a 4 hour window of time  for a $6.95 delivery fee or pay $9.95 – $12.95 for a 2 hour window of time for groceries to be delivered. I was given a code for FREE delivery & $7 off my first order, so I choose the 2 hour window of time for groceries to be delivered since it was free delivery. However, it turned out that the groceries were delivered 45 minutes after the 2 hour window of time.  It was last Friday evening when they were due to deliver the groceries, so the truck ended up getting caught in traffic. But, they did call 15 minutes before the end of the time frame to say they would be late.  I would just stick with the 4 hour window of time next time & pay the lower delivery fee.

The driver was very friendly, though, & brought all the groceries into the kitchen.  I ordered some produce to see how they did picking out the produce items & I was very impressed.  I am quite picky about my apples & these were nice, crunchy red apples.  The strawberries looked better than any that I regularly get from the store – I don’t think there was a bad strawberry out of the whole container (I don’t know about you, but there always seem to be at least 1-2 bad strawberries when I buy them at the store).  They took a lot of care in choosing the best items to deliver, which was important to me.

Overall, I felt that Safeway’s Home Grocery Delivery was a valuable service, especially in situations where the convenience factor is quite important for a family due to medical/health reasons, newborn baby, sick kids, death in the family & other situations which make it difficult to get to the grocery store regularly.  You will have to work a bit harder to find as significant of  savings since you can’t use paper manufacturer coupons, but by using the E-coupons, club card discounts & other online savings promotions, there are definitely ways to save using Safeway delivery. I’ve been on Safeway’s email list for quite awhile & I also notice that they send out periodic emails with free delivery codes as well.

Update: Check out this awesome idea from reader Kehau:

On a side note, when we went to Disneyland a couple of years ago, I ordered through safeway.com & had all of our groceries delivered to our hotel *we stayed at one that had a kitchen*. It was the best idea I had for that trip. It saved us the cost of renting a car, since we would have only used it to go grocery shopping. We made all our meals and had snacks available through out our week long vacation. The delivery showed up on time, actually right as we were checking in. = )

*Get $5 back instantly when you buy 10 as part of their Mega Promo – makes them $1.39/ea
Use {5} $1/2 blinkie coupons (found by the cheese – if you’ve collected these from other stores or if there’s plenty at your store)
Pay $8.90, Receive 2 $5 off catalinas (total of $10 off your next order)
Final Price  : $1.10 moneymaker for 10 bags of cheese (after figuring catalinas to use on a future purchase)

Thanks Life of a Couponaholic!

Safeway:

Update to Safeway’s Coupon Policy

June 21, 2010

Safeway has just made a change to their new coupon policy which I mentioned HERE.  The policy had said that Safeway would accept valid Catalina coupons issued by another retailer -#9 on the policy (which were including Register Rewards from Walgreens).  However, their policy has now changed to exclude Walgreens Register Rewards & any catalina coupons from other stores that do not specify a specific item (such as $5 off coupons from Albertson’s, Walgreens, etc).

Here’s the change they made which you can find HERE:

#9. Safeway will accept valid Catalina manufacturer coupon that is issued to a customer by another retailer only if such coupon is for a specific item.

Make sure to print a copy of this latest coupon policy for Safeway to keep in your coupon binder in case you have any questions or issues at the store.

Thanks The Frugal Find!

Safeway – Catalina for FREE Smart Balance Milk

June 9, 2010

Safeway is reported to have a catalina deal on  half gallons of Fat Free Smart Balance Milk,  resulting in FREE milk after your initial purchase.  I’m not sure how long this catalina deal will last, so you’ll want to check it out right away.

Transaction #1:

Buy half gallon of Smart Balance Fat Free Milk  - $3.99
Use $.75/1 printable coupon or  $.75/1 Smart Balance milk from 5/23 Red Plum (RP) insert
Pay  $3.24, Receive a catalina for FREE Smart Balance milk (up to $3.99)

Transaction #2:

Buy 1/2 gallon of Smart Balance Fat Free milk – $3.99
Use catalina for FREE Smart Balance milk
Final Price: FREE

*This deal is reported to be “rolling” (meaning you can keep buying more milk & using the catalina to pay for it, making it free & the catalina should keep printing each time.

*There are reports that this may be working for regular 1/2 gallons of Smart Balance milk, as well as the Smart Balance Buttery Spread (tub) – let us know if you try it & find those are working, too. (You’d want to start with the butter, though, as you’ll receive the catalina for the free milk)

*This also appears to be working at other stores around the country such as Meijer (as confirmed by Give Me Neither), possibly Kroger & more! Check out this link for more information.

Thanks Maybe Frugal!

Safeway’s New Coupon Policy

June 9, 2010

Guess what – Safeway has just updated their coupon policy & there are some new changes in the policy which should make it easier for you to use printable coupons at Safeway.  You  can find the full Safeway Coupon Policy HERE – make sure to print off a copy of it & stick it in your coupon binder/folder so you have it on hand in case you have any problems (it does say that the policy should  also be posted at the Customer Service desk) ! This policy is in effect from June 7, 2010. Thank you to Maygan from Maybe Frugal for alerting me to the change!

Here are the highlights:

#5: Coupon amount may be reduced so that any combined discounts and coupons do not exceed the value of the item. See number 12 below. This means that you cannot get overage on an item – but  they must reduce the coupon down. Ex: If the price of the item is $1.99 & you have a $2 off coupon – they just adjust the coupon to $1.99.

#8: Safeway will accept valid manufacturer coupons that display another retailer’s logo or name. – This could include those manufacturers coupons that you can print from the Target website or that Albertson’s has had recently can be used at Safeway, as long as it’s a manufacturer’s coupon (not a store coupon).

#9:  Safeway will accept valid Catalina manufacturer coupons that are issued to a customer by another retailer. Wow, this is a big change – so, if you get a catalina from Albertson’s, Fred Meyer, etc- you should be able to use it at Safeway. I’m not sure if this includes Register Rewards from Walgreens, but I would  think it would – you’d have to ask your store specifically or email Safeway corporate.

#16:  We gladly accept internet printed coupons. The same manufacturer and store coupon rules above apply to all internet printed coupons. This changed so that they no longer have the rule that the coupon has to be 50% or less of the product’s value (I know some of you had stores that enforced this rule,  so glad it’s gone! :) ).

#20. We will not accept “free product” internet printed manufacturer coupons.

E-Coupons & Paper Coupons:

Safeway’s new coupon policy does not specifically address the use of paper coupons with e-coupons (electronic coupons), except in the state of Hawaii, where it says you cannot use a paper coupon & e-coupon on the same product.  However, check out this post from Coupon Connections NW – a reader emailed Safeway to find out what their policy is in regards to using paper & e-coupons together.  You could print off that email, too – although I think it would be better to email Safeway directly & get them to send the policy to you, since it’s not part of their online coupon policy.

Thanks again Maygan!
