As I’ve mentioned before, I’m slightly addicted to S’mores, as is my hubby – so we decided to splurge & get a fire pit for our back yard as an early anniversary gift.  We got one for around $60 at Target yesterday (along with some great deals on their summer items – 50% off summer clearance as I shared on the Thrifty NW Mom Facebook page!).

We had to try it out the first night, of course, so our daughters could have their very first experience with S’mores  – but wouldn’t you know it, we have rain & colder temps in the middle of July. That didn’t stop us – we just got out our rain coats & sat around the campfire in the drizzle. It’s all about  being adventurous, right?

Hershey’s is having a fun campaign called “The S’more the Merrier”  – spending time with loved ones creating fun family memories while making S’mores over the campfire. Our evening of S’mores-making definitely fit the bill despite the rain! The girls have been begging for more S’mores since then.

You can see first-hand what our girls thought of roasting marshmallows & creating their first s’mores in my first-ever video!

As you can see, my girls definitely were devouring their s’mores – they loved the combination of warm, gooey marshmallow with sweet Hershey’s chocolate! And we found out that my 0ld daughter, Madalyn, is just like her mama – she loved seeing the marshmallow catch fire & then enjoy the crunchy, char-grilled marshmallow!

Hershey’s Facebook Contest:

The grand prize is a Canon Rebel camera, $250 Snapfish gift card, outdoor firebowl, roasting skewers set and all the ingredients needed to make S’mores, including Hershey’s milk chocolate bars.

  1. My favorite way to make smores is to get the chocolate all melty so its sticky gooey yummyness!

  2. I love making s’mores over a realtime campfire but we rarely get the chance.

  3. We love to gather around our fire pit in our backyard. Our firepit is home made with huge river rocks surrounding it. We get a huge fire going to produce good coals. We load up our roasting sticks with Marshmellows, rest our stick on our river rocks, slowly turn till a nice golden brown, we then put our mellows in between two graham crackers with a huge chunck of chocolate in the middle. Smush it all together so the chocolate melts and then take a huge sticky bite! We make S’mores about 2 times a week in the summer time…there is nothing better than ending a long day than my sitting by the fire roasting marshmellow!

  4. I like my smores the classic way – perfectly toasted marshmellow, with graham cracker and hershey bar. Oh, but it must be done over a camp fire!

  5. We gather around our firebowl and let each of our kids roast their own marshmallows…then they decide if they want traditional hersheys chocolate bar or reeses peanut butter cup on their s’more. We have already made s’mores probably 10 times this summer! It is a favorite family night event! :-)

  6. The old fashioned way with graham cracker, hershey chocolate and a toasted marshmallow.

  7. Love the video!
I like my s’mores with the marshmallow gooey and light brown and the chocolate all melty on the graham crackers. Yum!

  8. We have a firepit in our backyard too and it’s fun to make s’mores there or at the campfire. I just learned to make them with reese’s cups and wow…delicious!

  9. What fun! Thanks for sharing their first time! It was fun to see you and the hubby make an appearance as well! : )

  10. Roast the marshmallows over a campfire until golden brown! It’s perfect, the center is all gooey and yummy and it melts the chocolate just enough for deliciousness :)

  11. I love my marshmallows all ooey gooey with the chocolate melted over the marshmallows. I use hersheys special dark candy bars to pump it up a notch. Yum!!! I heart smores.

  12. I love my S’mores when we go camping and roast the marshmallows over the campfire….I think the bonus is the fire smell…=)

  13. We’ve started using the fudge striped cookies with marshmallows. Makes for a yummy treat around the camp fire.

  14. We like our smores with Hershey bars, marshmellows and graham crackers.
Sometimes we put Nutella chocolate spread on it.

  15. We LOVE….. smore’s! I love them just about any way but 2 of my fave are 1- with mint patties! Or 2- with lemon curd on a nilla cookie!!!! OMG GOOD!!!!

  16. I love smore’s with the family! Whether they turn out burnt to a crisp or just perfect, it is the time we get to sped together that is the best!

  17. We love our s’mores any way we can get them! Either at the beach or in the backyard!! My son prefers to eat them cold, he puts the marshmallow on the stick, puts it close to the fire, and then eats the pieces all separately! My daughter and I like them lightly toasted with the chocolate not quite melted. My darling husband, will eat any s’more we don’t want!

  18. I like to eat my smores the good ol’ fashion way around a campfire with lots of family and friends!

  19. I cooked at a camp last week. We made enough for 140 campers in the oven. Cracker, chocolate, then the marshmallow. When you take them out of the oven, you smash the marshmallow down with the top cracker. The thought of 140 campers, with sticks, in the dark, in front of a hot campfire, is not a welcomed thought. A delicious snack in the dining hall with plenty of napkins available is a much better idea.

  20. I love surprising my boys with smores on rainy days and in the winter, so my favorite way to make smores is in the oven: cracker topped with chocolate and then a marshmallow. Then you bake in 350 degree oven for 3 minutes, smoosh marshmallow down with another cracker and bake a couple minutes more.

  21. I love making smores over the campfire while camping with our family under the stars.

  22. I like to pour mini m&ms into the hole of the roasted marshmallow, then sandwich it between graham crackers. The minis melt inside the mallow and it’s mmmm good!

  23. and my favorite part is seeing how messy my little boys faces get after eating them :) Their faces will be soo sticky, but they love them so much I can’t help but laugh!

  24. I like to slice a hole in the marshmallow, stick the chocolate inside, and then roast it–the chocolate is gooey, melty, warm deliciousness!

  25. Mmm, s’mores. They bring back memories of Girl Scout camp! I really like them the traditional way, but also with peanut butter (crave the salty and sweet combo), or using my mom’s recipe of homemade ginger cookies. Lots of spices and molasses, plus the creamy marshmallow and chocolate. My husband is one very skillful mallow roaster and treats me to many of his results.

  26. We make smores in the microwave when we can’t roast the marshmallows over a campfire. The marshmallow gets really big and the kids love to squish it into the graham cracker.

  27. Out on the back deck we have contained fireplace. Nice to sit out in the back yard and enjoy the evening with smores!

  28. Sometimes I like to switch it up, and throw a Reese’s in my smore, instead of a hersheys bar! Now I want a smore. really bad. :p

  29. Hmmm…making smores with my family while camping in the mountains, preferably with the sound of water nearby. Reality is usually making them over the fire bowl in the backyard, but it’s still a lot of gooey fun! And anything to get teenagers engaging with the family–chocolate is a surefire way to do that!!!

  30. My favorite way to make s’mores is to toast them until golden brown over open coals then quickly squish the marshmallow onto the chocolate so it gets melty. Yum!

  31. Occasionally, I like to have a chewy chocolate chip cookie in place of the Hershey’s chocolate bar in my smore!

  32. When we went camping as kids, my dad would bend wire coat hangers that we would use to burn the marshmellow’s to a crisp over the campfire and then smash them between two graham crackers and a piece of Hershey’s milk chocolate. Can’t wait ’til my son’s old enough to take camping to continue this family tradition! :-)

  33. We love to sit our graham cracker with the chocolate on top near the fire to melt/soften the chocolate while our marshmallow is roasting!

  34. I LOVE S’MORES! I can’t always wait for a backyard BBQ so I put the Hershey’s chocolate and the marshmallows on a plate and then microwave them for 30 secs or so and then take them out and scoop them onto the graham cracker. Yum! Fastest way to make S’mores! ;-)

  35. I have to agree with some of the other comments above: I think that the best S’mores are made over a campfire – the magic of the outdoors, the adventure of camping, and dancing flames and glowing coals just elevate the experience.

I like the perfectly roasted marshmallow – one that just about falls off of the roasting fork, because the inside has become glorious goo from the heat, and outside is a beautiful caramel brown. Too long over the fire and the marshmallow becomes a charred sacrifice – or my husband will eat the crackly bits then my daughter or I will eat the gooey inside. Once we have the marshmallow just right we slide it onto the graham cracker with the Hershey’s Chocolate snuggled between those all important elements. If you are patient and wait just long enough (my is that ever hard, especially if you are young or young at heart) the chocolate softens and melts so that when you bite into the finished S’more you get the crisp crunch of the cracker followed by the sweet rush of melted marshmallow and chocolate. Sigh…

  36. I like s’mores the old fashioned way over a campfire or fire pit. We tried the giant marshmallows on the 4th and they were just to messy! My kids love the tradition of summer time s’mores so much that they’ve been know to roast marshmallows over a candle!

Thanks for the awesome giveaway opportunity!

  37. I live in Seattle so of course i love making smores outdoors but if its a rainy Seattle day and my son and I are in the mood for smores we make them over the stove its not quite the same but the stove works great and usually are pretty hard to burn like the outdoor type. SO.. next time its raining and your in the mood for that chocolatey gooey, cookie goodness just try doing it over the stove.

  38. I like to make Smores with my family on camping trips…my marshmallow can’t be burnt though, just lightly browned. :)

  39. I just learned about making them with Reese’s, but I still like them the old fashion way…with the chocolate melted!

  40. My family loves them made the old fashion way, over a campfire with family and friends. Summer has always meant SMORES. Smore please. :0)

  41. My favorite way to make s’mores is …

    3/4 c. light corn syrup
    3 tbsp. butter
    1 pkg. milk chocolate morsels
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 pkg. Golden Graham cereal (9 c.)
    3 c. miniature marshmallows

Grease 9 x 13 inch pan. Heat syrup, butter and morsels to boiling stirring constantly. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla. Pour over cereal in bowl, toss until coated. Fold in marshmallows 1 cup at a time. Press into pan with buttered back of spoon. Let stand 1 hour. Cut into 2 inch squares. Store at room temperature.

  42. We like to make them with the big marshmallows and sometimes add peanut butter to the graham crackers!!! YUM!!!

  43. We love smores over the campfire however, often when we camp it’s raining or the firewood is wet so we head into the trailer and watch the marshmallows “grow” in the microwave!

  44. We like to use the toasted coconut marshmallows when we can find them! YUM-O! We have a rock fire pit in the back yard that is used often this time of year.

  45. I love to use homemade cookies(peanut butter are my son’s fav) instead of graham crackers.
