I haven’t really talked about Walmart too often, but due to recent updates to their coupon policy (which is now a corporate wide policy found on their website) & price-matching policy, Walmart can be a great place to really score some big savings on your grocery & household bill. Since they do price-match the deals you’ll find at the local stores, you can do your research ahead of time with the grocery store ads & save on gas money by bringing those ads with you & shop all in one location at Walmart for many of the deals. {They do not honor double coupons, though}.
Walmart is a bit tricky in that they do not offer regular weekly ads & prices can vary slightly between different Walmart stores, so just know that going in, that prices may be slightly different even from store to store in the same area (typically just a few cents difference, though).
If you’re new to shopping at Walmart with coupons, you’ll definitely want to check out the changes & upgrades to their coupon policy & ad-match guarantee. I highly recommend printing off a copy of each of these policies & keep it in your coupon binder in case you have any problems.
Here are a few highlights of the updates/clarifications to the policies:
Coupon Policy:
- Accept manufacturer’s coupons, including internet printable coupons (acceptable in black & white or color)
- Accept competitor’s coupons for specific items with a specific price. Ex: Use an Albertson’s in-ad coupon for “$.99 for Honey Nut Cheerios”. They do not accept double coupons, dollar off purchase coupons, etc.
- Accept competitor’s Catalina coupons with a specific price for a product (these are the coupons that print from the register when you’ve paid for your items). Ex: They will accept a catalina coupon from Safeway for “$2 off Pampers diapers” . They do not accept catalina coupons for dollar off purchase
- They now will give “overage” for coupons that exceed the value of the item. This will be given as cash or applied to the rest of your purchase. Ex: $5 off coupon for Similac formula. Price is $3.80. You will be given $1.20 back in cash or applied to the rest of your purchase.
- There is no limit on the number of coupons you can use in a transaction. However, if you have more than 40 coupons or $50 worth of coupons in one transaction, the system will require supervisor verification.
Ad-Match Guarantee:
- Walmart will match any local competitor’s advertised price if it’s for a specific item at a specific price.Item must be identical in size, quantity, brand, color, etc. Ex: Target is selling the Tangled DVD for $12.99. You can price-match that at Walmart & receive the same price, $12.99
- You are no longer required to have the copy of the competitor’s ad with you to price-match. {I still would suggest that you bring the copy of the ad with you, though, just to confirm the price with the cashier or at least to have on hand if there are any problems.}
- They will price-match Buy One Get One Free (BOGO) ads as long as there is a specified price on the item you buy. Ex: “Buy One Wisk Detergent at $4.99, Get one free.“

Easter Clearance:
I was in Walmart yesterday & found that the majority of the Easter clearance was at 75% off at my local store (South Hill Puyallup). It was found in the Stationery section of the store with 2 aisles & 3 end caps (the picture above is just of baskets, but the other aisle had quite a variety of other Easter items; my picture is just not wanting to scan in at the moment to show you what they had). I also found Easter candy at 50% off in the grocery section.
I’d make sure to scan the items as I found a large box of foam craft pieces that were marked $4.95 so they should have been around $1.25 for the box. They ended up scanning as $.50 for the box – not sure why they scanned that low. That was an awesome deal for me as my girls love these foam pieces to use for various crafts & it’s a large box. So, just scan things that you’re unsure of & you might be pleasantly surprised!
Let us know what clearance deals & other coupon deals you’ve spotted at your local Walmart store!
So, how many of you shop at Walmart regularly? Would you be interested in more Walmart highlights on a regular basis?

As of yesterday my Walmart was still taking albertsons doublers coupons.
Thanks for the update, Cora! It may vary by store, but the corporate policy is that they do not honor the double coupons at this time.
I used to work at Walmart, and it really varies by what cashier you get.
I would like to see them, I actually shop there quite a bit especially with the new coupon policy. The trick is just to be patient with the cashiers and polite, They have had to call a manager each time for the matchups but I always end up getting the price I want and it really does help to take a copy of the coupon policy.
I’m not seeing the Tidy Cat. what zip did you use? Thanks
My WalMart is usually really good. They will price match for prices after +UP rewards or Walgreen’s register rewards. For example, if soda is 3.99 at Rite Aid, with a +UP reward for $2.00 off with purchase, my WalMart will give it to me for $1.99. I usually try to go the same time every week and usually use the same cashier, but if there was something I couldn’t get at Rite Aid for the price I wanted, WalMart usually has it. Also, on Black Friday, I used their ad match policy to get most of the items I wanted and they priced matched ALL competitor prices on that day.
ex. 50% off kids clearence in Spokane

I shop at Walmart quite a bit and would love to see more information on them in Thrifty Northwest Mom
