It’s time for our last giveaway of the week to conclude our week of giveaways!  Our final giveaway is for a book written by one of my favorite travel writers, Lora Shinn, who is based here in Washington.  Her website, Cascadia Kids, is an amazing resource for kid-friendly travel in the Northwest including Washington, Oregon & Vancouver, BC.  I was excited to find out that Lora also recently published her first book, Northwest Kid Trips in April 2010.  It’s now available for sale on Amazon & is published by ParentMap.

Lora sent me a copy of Northwest Kid Trips so I could check it out.  This book is going to be such a great resource for us as it highlights the four major cities in the western part of the Northwest – Seattle, Portland, Victoria, BC & Vancouver, BC.  For each city, there are sections regarding everything you will need to know for attractions, shopping, entertainment, lodging, dining & more! But, this is different from other Northwest travel books in that all of her tips & suggestions are based on traveling & sightseeing with kids.

Here’s a sampling of  information you’ll find for each Northwest city:

  • Top 5-6 things to do in each city
  • Suggested itineraries – she gives different options based on your family dynamics (if you’re an active family, foodie family, retro family or artsy family)
  • Age-by-age guide for attractions
  • Calendar of events for the year
  • Safety suggestions
  • Ways to travel within the city

Within each city, Lora then highlights various neighborhoods & focuses on lodging recommendations, places to go/things to do with kids, dining & shopping. She also highlights a getaway location which is not far from each city, which provides a little escape from the city for a fun excursion.

I highly recommend Northwest Kid Trips as an excellent resource for all Northwest families, but also for those who may be traveling to any of these cities at some point. You’ll find not only the popular attractions, but also the unusual & off-the-beaten path ideas that your kids will love! You’ll be well-prepared for any type of trip with kids within these 4 cities & their surrounding areas, based on the wealth of information that Lora provides within this book. You can easily pick it up & find some fun activities just for the day if you’re local or plenty of ideas to make a week-long trip if you’re visiting from another area.

I would love to win this book because I have two children. Ages 2 and 10. While I grew up in the PNW, my family was very poor. We did not have the resources to travel out of my home town. I worked very hard to over come the poverty, and have the opportunities to provide for my children in a way my Mom never could for me. However, being as I have no clue where to start or what to look for, I become very over whelmed and agitated when trying to plan trips. A guide would be a life saver for me. I would love to take my children to experience the NW and see things I never had the opportunity to see as a child myself.

I would love this book. We are always trying new things with our kids and I was not aware of a book related to my area. We have bought a similar book for traveling the NW with our dog (before kids:)but love that there is a book for activities for our family.
