We had a super busy day today…so my husband decided to head to Albertson’s himself  to get stocked up on some Post cereal (I think he was just happy to buy his sugar cereals that I don’t normally buy ;) ).  Here’s his account with pictures and scenarios, too! If he can do it, you guys can too!! :)

I hit Albertson’s today, armed with the knowledge that my wife knows what she’s doing when she sends me out couponing. Because, well, I don’t. I may think I have it all figured out, but when I get to the store, my memory goes blank, I start to think that I am missing some important part to make the deal work, etc.  So, when she gave me some coupons, and told me to hit Albertson’s, I was nervous. But then I realized the genius she is. Because when I got there I scored a total of 22 boxes of cereal and 4 bananas for $3.14, AND a $4.00 catalina (although it did take four transactions)! So, we made $.86! We did have to spend $2.25 to buy coupons, so our net cost was $1.39. Here is what I did:

Buy 4 boxes @ $1.59 each= $6.36

I used two $1/2 coupons (purchased from internet)

I used two doublers

I paid $2.36, and received a $3 catalina

————————–

Buy 6 boxes @ $1.59 each= $9.54

I used three $1/2 coupons and three doublers

I used the catalina from the previous transaction

I paid $.54, and received a $4 catalina

————————–

Buy 6 boxes @ $1.59 each= $9.54

Buy 2 bananas (about .75 lb) @ .69/lb = $.55 (this is needed as a filler to get you over $4)

I used three $1/2 coupons and three doublers

I used the catalina from the previous transaction

I paid $.09, and received a $4 catalina

————————–

Buy 6 boxes @ $1.59 each= $9.54

Buy 2 bananas (about .85 lb) @ .69/lb =$ .61

I used three $1/2 coupons and three doublers

I used the catalina from the previous transaction

I paid $.15, and received a $4 catalina

WOW!!! Your husband rocks! Is he willing to teach classes for other husbands?? :) My hubby is quite proud of the fact that I save our family lots of money at the grocery store, but he just can’t bring himself to use a coupon himself. I thought it was just a guy thing! But that’s okay, I’ve always been the shopper and he takes care of the kiddos.
Doesn’t it feel good to be so stocked up? I paid $2.25 for my coupons on eBay as well and they should come in the mail today, so I’ll be doing similar transactions.

AWESOME! You are so lucky your husband is willing to deal and then didn’t mess it up!! I’m sure my hubby could, too, but I’ve never asked him to. I guess I’m too nervous!

Amanda – My husband didn’t even go with doublers – he got them all from Customer Service. They have extra flyers there, you just have to ask for them. They also gave him some extras to take home!

Melissa – The doubles for the transaction I’d mentioned were only on the $1 coupons – Albertson’s will only double up to $1 (so the $2 coupon couldn’t be doubled). Your store then adjusted the $2 coupon down to $1.59 which was the sale price of the item. I should have accounted for that in my scenario…sorry about that! I’ll update the post with that info. So, instead of $2 off, it’s $1.59 off (but that’s still better than $1 off 2 as the other coupon would be). It used to be that Albertson’s would give you the overage (difference) between the coupon & sale price, but that policy has changed now.

I’m really jealous of your Albertson’s. No joke, when things are on sale for a really good deal you have to be at the one here when the store opens, and even then they don’t have enough product in stock for everybody, and they usually do not restock. I wish we had a better/bigger one so i could score some good deals!

Renea – I have never had to do this, but I know others have done this (the Fabulessly Frugal gals do this frequently) where they will call the store ahead of time (at least a few days before the sale starts if not the week before) to let them know they’d like to order a certain amount for a special order. It’s definitely worth checking with your store manager. Also, if they run out, they should be giving you a raincheck for the item. The only problem is that you wouldn’t get the catalina after Sun 3/21. I’ve asked for rainchecks with other deals, though, and it’s worked great (as long as I can still use the coupon).

Renea – my hubby works at Albertson’s but they will order more if you ask for it to be done. Also, always ask someone if there is any more in the back. Ideally, I would not ask a checker but someone who is actually stocking a shelf, they would have the best knowledge and would for sure get up and check for you. The rain checks are great, with the catalina expiring soon, it does suck that you might miss the BIG deal, but still .59 a box is not bad..and prob well worth it!! Good luck!!

Do different flavors of Honey Bunches of Oats print the cat still? Because I went tonight and got Vanilla and Almond and no cat :( But I see strawberry in the photo! What did I do wrong? Should I go back and exchange the flavors for the plain honey bunches of oats? Will they be able to force the catalina for me? Help!
